The responsibility is tenfold, and the pressure to be the best never stops.

During the interview, Jay B shared his experience of being the leader of a group and the stress that comes with it. The singer admitted that he often doubted the right leader role for him because he was so quiet.

GOT7’s Jay B shares his experience of being a group leader and more with DIVE Studios

On May 13, 2022, GOT7 leader Jay B released a video collection for the health and wellness app DIVE Studios called Mindset. The K-pop singer shared various stories from his life, including memories of his family, his struggles with anxiety, and more.

In the latest episode entitled GOT7’s Leading WeightJay B opened up about what it’s like to be the leader of one of the most popular groups in the K-pop music industry.

He started the episode by revealing that he didn’t want to be GOT7’s leader in the first place. In fact, he had asked JYP Entertainment to make someone else a leader. She says:

“When I was young, it was difficult to accept the title of Leader of GOT7. So, I told the agency many times that I didn’t want to be the leader.”

That Thursday The singer backed up his statement with reasons by revealing that he was never very good at verbal communication. Jay B used to be a dancer and really likes B-boying which is his way of expressing himself. In the video, he says:

“I’m not good at expressing myself in words. Who I am as Lim Jae Beom is very quiet and shy. Because I have a job where I have to show and promote myself to the public, my personality has changed, but back then, I didn’t talk much.”

Jay B went on to clarify that there was one more reason behind his reluctance to become a leader. He knew that leadership would come with many responsibilities, and was afraid that those responsibilities would prove too heavy for him at such a young age. He explained,

“When there is a problem, it is my responsibility to coordinate between the company and team members. I was a bit wary and afraid of having such a big responsibility at such a young age. But fortunately, GOT7 received so much love.”

Jay B stated that things were going pretty well until all seven members decided to step down from JYP Entertainment last year, which led to a major change in plans.

“I feel like I have to defend this moment and our identity. Even though we remain as a team, since we are all separated, I feel I have to act as a strong thread or rope that keeps us connected. I realize that. It’s up to me to make plans to team activities and also the long term future for the team.”

Jay B effectively handled unforeseen circumstances and proved himself capable and worthy of leading one of the biggest K-pop boy groups in the industry. He claimed to have learned more about legal issues since the change to obtain trademarks and copyrights associated with the group.

“Before, the role of a leader was burdensome, but now, I’m thinking more about how to maintain this time well, maybe even a little more than the other members, to be honest.”
